In November we took a group of our young members down to Devon to paddle on the River Dart. For some, this was their first white water river experience, for the more experienced paddlers, this was a BCU three star assessment.
The trip started at 6am on a Saturday morning. The group loaded their boats onto the minibus and embarked on a 6 hour journey to Dartmoor. On arrival, the group was divided into two groups. Laurence, one of our qualified volunteers, took the intermediate group to do their BCU 3 Star assessment and Darrell, one of our instructors, took the beginners on their first ever white water experience!
Both groups joined the river at the ‘two bridges’ point. All paddlers did really well, with only a few swimmers, most of which were at triple falls, which is a grade 3 rapid, where even the most experienced paddler can be caught unaware.
The youngest member on the trip was Kofi Barber-May, who, for his first white water river experience, did really well. All members of the intermediate group successfully achieved their BCU 3 Star Award.
The day ended with some very weary and cold paddlers, who looked forward to a well earned pizza and a luxurious night in the camping barn!
